Moving soon? Why you need renters insurance!

Renters insurance covers more then just your personal belongings.

September is prime rental season, and a very popular time to move. If you’re planning a Sept. 1 move, you’ve likely reserved your U-Haul, started packing, and perhaps picked out curtains for your new place. Or, maybe you’re finally moving out of Mom and Dad’s and this is your first apartment. In all the excitement (or hassle) of your move, don’t forget about renters insurance!

If you don’t already have renters insurance, you may be thinking to yourself, why do I even need it? My landlord’s insurance on the apartment will cover my things, right? Wrong. Your landlord’s insurance will cover damage to the property, from say, a storm or a fire. It will cover any belongings they own within the apartment, such as a microwave or the washer and dryer. What it won’t cover? Your stuff. Your family’s stuff. People injured in your home.

Consider the following scenarios:

  • Your apartment has an unfortunate fire, causing smoke and water damage. Ruining your belongings, including your couches, bed and your clothes.
  • You go out for an evening with your friends, and while you’re out, someone breaks into your apartment and steals your TV, your laptop and other valuables.
  • It’s a Friday evening and you have some friends over for a dinner party. A friend gets up from the dinner table and trips, injuring themselves badly.
  • Your dog gets loose and bites your neighbor in a nervous attempt to evade capture.

Now consider this: Your renters insurance can cover all of the above, including legal defense in the unfortunate event that someone decides to sue you.

If you are unable to live in your apartment due to fire or another covered event, it will also provide you with temporary living expenses until you can find a new accommodation or are able to move back in.

There are 2 types of renters insurance policies you may purchase: Actual Cash Value and Replacement Cost. It’s always a good idea to document your belongings – take pictures, video, and an overall inventory of your possessions. And hold on to bills and receipts.

Be a responsible renter and take steps to protect your belongings and your finances. Most renters are surprised at how inexpensively priced Rental Insurance is, and some insurance companies will even offer a discount if you bundle it with your car insurance.

Keep your assets safe and shielded from unexpected events! Moving can be a hassle, but insurance doesn’t have to be! Call your independent agent today!
