Why do I need to inventory my property?

Do you keep a home inventory list? These apps will help you file an insurance claim when unforeseen events occur.
7/31/2014

Theft, fire, and other disasters happen every day.

When the unexpected strikes, are you prepared to place an insurance claim?

Try this. Sit in your living room with your eyes closed. Can you list all the belongings in this single space? Now go a bit further. Can you list all the objects in other rooms? How about your garage? Can you account for your myriad of electronics, books, artwork, or even a prized collection?

Efficient Claims Process
Without a home inventory list, it may be impossible to submit an insurance claim based on the value of your property.

How to Create a Home Inventory List
If you are technology challenged, start your home inventory list by taking out pencil, paper, and camera to record your assets.

The Insurance Information Institute (I.I.I.) suggests you catalog by “making a list of your possessions, describing each item, and noting where you bought it and its make and model. Clip to your list any sales receipts, purchase contracts, and appraisals you have. For clothing, count the items you own by category (pants, coats, shoes, for example), making notes about those that are especially valuable. For major appliances and electronic equipment, record the serial numbers, which are usually found on the back or bottom.”

For those who have computers or cell phones, there a number tools for documenting personal items.

Know Your Stuff® Home Inventory App
Know Your Stuff ®, free and easy to use software developed by I.I.I., is highly recommended by independent insurance agents. Users input information about possessions, including adding rooms, items, and photos, through the iPhone app or Web-based software that automatically synchronizes between the two platforms. Once loaded, all the information is stored in a personal, password-protected account for convenient review and retrieval.
