Uninsured Auto Coverage

In 2009, 13.8% of motorists, or about one in seven drivers, were uninsured.
5/21/2013

Most states require car insurance. Regardless, this does not deter violators. In fact, a 2009 study by the Insurance Information Institute found that nationwide 13.8% of motorists, or about one in seven drivers, were uninsured. This percentage changed from state to state with the highest, 28%, in Mississippi to the lowest, 9.1%, in North Dakota.

Why don’t drivers buy car insurance?

"Laws in most states have proven ineffective in reducing the numbers of drivers who are uninsured," says Loretta Worters, vice president of the Insurance Information Institute. "Some drivers can't afford insurance, and some drivers with surcharges for accidents or serious traffic violations don't want to pay the high premiums that result from a poor driving record. It is costly to track down violators of compulsory insurance laws, and unless the odds of getting caught are high and the penalties severe, drivers will continue to flout the law."

What does this mean to you, a driver with car insurance?

Be aware and be prepared because accidents do happen. In fact, car insurance industry experts estimate you will file a car collision claim once every 17.9 years.

If you are at fault for a car collision, your insurance will pay for the damages you caused, and your no-fault provides for your medical expenses.

If the uninsured driver was at fault, it may prove difficult to receive any compensation, with or without legal assistance. In some states, no-fault coverage will pay for your injuries and lost wages up to the policy limit, but not for pain and suffering and medical costs beyond this amount. Protect yourself and your family by making sure this important coverage is in place.
