On Which Social Media Site Will Your Agent Find You?

Not only do you as an individual and consumer seem to “have to” pick a social media site, but business people (including your local independent insurance agent) have to determine which site you might be using.
3/5/2013

Some days it really does seem like it’s out of control. There are so many social media sites to pick from, or participate in, that it can overwhelm you. Not only do you as an individual and consumer seem to “have to” pick a social media site, but business people (including your local independent insurance agent) have to determine which site you might be using.

So which are the top sites today? According to ebizmba.com, the following are currently (as of March 1, 2013) the top social media sites. And no, there aren’t too many surprises:

#1 Facebook (with 750 million unique monthly visitors) – despite talk about the top social media site having reached its peak in the United States, it has a VERY commanding lead in terms of traffic!

#2 Twitter (250 million unique monthly visitors) – it used to be said that people use Facebook to connect with people they know, and they use twitter to connect with the people they WANT to know. It appears to have become more common-place than that. I have to admit to liking the built-in brevity.

#3 LinkedIn (110 million unique monthly visitors) – a business to business site, LinkedIn has certainly gained a number of followers among small and large businesses alike (even if they are utilizing the site for different reasons).

#4 Pinterest (85.5 million unique monthly visitors) – a quick rise to prominence, this site was first launched in 2010.

#5 MySpace (70.5 million unique monthly visitors) – really? MySpace is probably the original social media site for many of today’s Facebook users. I didn’t think this site would crack the top 10, never mind being number 5. Perhaps the key is offering “classic” and “new” versions.

#6 Google (65 million unique monthly visitors) – I am truly surprised that Google’s latest entry into the social media sphere hasn’t done better. In my opinion, it’s quite a nice system, enabling users to separate business and personal social contacts. I guess it’s something akin to the old Beta and VHS tapes – Beta was better, but VHS captured market share quickly and then was able to defend its position. Alas, technology has now passed by them both.

So where are you spending your time online? There are many other social media sites, but the next on this list captures a mere 25.5 million unique monthly visitors (yes, I wish I could get that many visitors to www.insurancedeals4u.com). Of course, all of these social media sites are still trying to figure out how to turn traffic into purchasing dollars in a big way. In the meantime, we’ll just have to settle for getting to know each other a little better.

Of course, the big question is: Do you even want to consider purchases or do any shopping when you’re visiting a social media site? Insurance, banking, home goods, etc.? Anything at all?
